House Plant Activity

This activity is going to show us how condensation forms on a plant or tree in the environment. The cool thing about this is we can do it from our own living room!

Set-Up

For this activity you are going to need:

  1. House plant of any kind
  2. A clear plastic bag
  3. Tape
  4. A bright window
  5. A parent for assistance

Task

Take your house plant and place the clear plastic bag over the plant. You want to tape the bag around the pot so that it is air tight (no air can get in and no air can get out!). Once the plant is sealed up tight, place it in-front of a sunny window. The plant needs to be left in-front of the window for a few hours. I would recommend leaving it over night and have your student check in on the plant every few hours!

What your student should find is that as time goes by, you will notice more and more condensation on the inside of the bag! This is caused by heat being transferred to the plant and little water droplets dispersing onto the bag!
